Portugal: Abandoned animals double as associations show little confidence in new protection law

Last year the number of abandoned animals being cared for in kennels throughout Portugal reached close to the 30,000 mark, more than double the numbers from six years earlier. Just last month a “historic” new animal protection bill was passed making the neglect or abandonment of pets a criminal offence punishable with jail time, but associations are showing little faith that it will make any difference at all.
