Portugal: Parliament recognizes animals as sentient being

The MPs approved the amendments to the Civil Code which establish the legal status of animals. The Assembly of the Republic approved today, in a global final vote, the new legal status of animals, recognizing animals as "sentient beings." An amendment to the Civil Code which was adopted unanimously following the debate in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees.
According to the text now approved, animals have autonomy in relation to people and things: "It amends the Civil Code establishing a legal status of animals, recognizing their nature as sentient beings, and the Penal Code, explaining the concept of animal in the dispositions concerning things ".(Portuguese)
